Would anyone be interested in participating in a sort of retro gaming "book club" style group? Basically, picking a console era, voting on a game, then playing through it together and discussing it? (Emulation is fine, we don't all have real hardware)

It seems like a fun idea. I want to call it "The Retro Retreat."

Wide open to ideas to bring it from conception to reality.

Retro Game Club: ASSEMBLE!
The first thing to figure out is where to chat while we get set up and organized.
Let's make this a group decision, OK? Cast your vote:

Just in case Matrix wins...

I'm far from being a Matrix pro, but I'm thinking that the general "space" can be for anyone who wants to chat about retro gaming, and then an individual room can be devoted to the people doing monthly game playthroughs together.

Getting some things ready... I'm having fun with this!

LOL I'm pretty sure people are voting in this poll who aren't interested in the retro game club. But if there ARE 100+ people interested, that's pretty fantastic.

was the clear winner!
I just bought the domain retroretreat.club, and this weekend I'll set us up a proper Matrix homeserver 👍

@killyourfm @Jojonintendo @thanius @nausahaver @lyonsinbeta @baltmatrix @TeamLinux01 @chris @Btph @gsquirrel @CleanDesign @tylnesh @jsstaedtler for more "live" discussions, definitely matrix, signal is too much of a pain on the desktop (it works when it wants to, plus needs to be signed up for on a mobile app on ios or android with a phone number) and mastodon doesn't do well for threading group conversations

@raptor85 I'm definitely aligned with this. Matrix tended to be unreliable during my time at Mozilla, but I think it IS the best option, and I'm sure things have been improved.

@killyourfm Not sure how long ago that was but I've used it for a while, all my friends have moved over to it as well. (with a bit of prodding tbf), we even have the full voice calls/etc set up on our home server for gaming. It's basically just better discord without all the crap now.

I would never use it to replace a forum or something like masto of course but for chat imho it's the best there is at the moment.

@raptor85 Yeaaaaa... every time I log into Discord for something, it just feels so loud and chaotic and distracting.

@raptor85 ... I just re-read this and I sound so old 🤣

@killyourfm eh, not really, I get what you mean by it, whenever you log into discord you have to dismiss like 20 notifications of it trying to upsell their service, then even in the chat room there's just CONSTANT things it shows you to try to sell you stuff.

Everyone moved to it for a while because it was basically just IRC with pictures and a built in teamspeak server but as soon as they had the captive audience boy did they tighten that noose and start pushing to monetize.

Happy to help promote this community with Matrix’ official channels 😇

@killyourfm @raptor85

@thibaultamartin @raptor85 Awww, thank you so much! It's definitely looking like Matrix will be our destination.

@killyourfm @raptor85 It has improved. I haven't had stuck notifications for a while now. *knocks on wood*.

@dannycolin @raptor85 HAHA that is exactly the type of behavior I was referring to. Fantastic!

@10leej @killyourfm @Jojonintendo @thanius @nausahaver @lyonsinbeta @baltmatrix @TeamLinux01 @chris @Btph @gsquirrel @CleanDesign @tylnesh @jsstaedtler ugh, the "funny" part is this is pretty much true, nintendo IS petty enough to shut down a retro games club because some members use perfectly legal emulators to play games they haven't sold in 40 years.

@killyourfm @Jojonintendo @thanius @nausahaver @lyonsinbeta @baltmatrix @TeamLinux01 @chris @Btph @gsquirrel @CleanDesign @jsstaedtler

I am on all of those, but discord makes me feel somewhat icky, even though I use it with my buddies for cs2. I am pretty much split between matrix and Signal. Mastodon is fine for a social media, but chat? Eh

@TeamLinux01 @killyourfm @Jojonintendo @thanius @nausahaver @lyonsinbeta @baltmatrix @chris @Btph @gsquirrel @CleanDesign @jsstaedtler

Also, as a member of the Ubuntu Matrix Council,
It would be kinda funny for me to vote against Matrix 😇

@tylnesh @TeamLinux01 @Jojonintendo @thanius @nausahaver @lyonsinbeta @baltmatrix @chris @Btph @gsquirrel @CleanDesign @jsstaedtler HA! Kudos for that!
Admittedly, I also prefer to avoid Discord, but it felt fair to include it. I suspected pretty strongly though that this group would vote open source.

@killyourfm @tylnesh @TeamLinux01 @Jojonintendo @thanius @nausahaver @lyonsinbeta @baltmatrix @chris @gsquirrel @CleanDesign @jsstaedtler

I have everything except signal, so I'll defer to matrix I guess...probably still should get signal at some point

@killyourfm I'm currently re-experiencing Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii... does this count as retro yet? :P

@schykle OH MAN I am dying to replay that! Yet another Mario game I started but never finished back in the day.

To your question: I think there's some debate on whether 6th or 7th gen is considered the starting point for retro games, but the Wii is almost 20 years old. I certainly consider it retro at this point.

@killyourfm It's just so dang good! Worth a revisit for sure!

I only partially kid, but wow that makes me feel so old because it's still so fresh for me in my mind 😩

I did also play a lot of N64 games back in the day and I know that certainly must count :P Looking forward to seeing all the awesome interactions around this!

@schykle Does it make you feel old... or young again? Serious question! I spent all last weekend playing Mario Kart and Super Mario Odyssey with my friend and it honestly made me feel young again. It was just pure FUN.

@killyourfm @schykle
I would consider it retro at this point.

Do we need to define video games like Magic: the Gathering defines formats (Vintage, Modern, Pioneer, Standard)?

@TeamLinux01 @schykle Oh, that sounds fun to riff on!

Vintage: Atari, Intellivision, C64?
Retro: NES to Gamecube
Classic: ???

@killyourfm @schykle

I feel like N64 to Wii U is pretty Classic at this point.

Do people still consider PS5 next gen?

@TeamLinux01 @schykle I have no idea where the blurry line of next-gen exists anymore. Is PS5 current-gen, but Switch 2 is next-gen? Is PC always current gen and next-gen? LOL

@killyourfm @schykle

Wouldn't PC be last-gen, current-gen and next-gen?

It transends all generations. At least as long as we keep using x86 instuction sets and backwards compatible libraries.

It is kinda sad that DirectX is one of the best Linux gaming APIs thanks to WINE/Proton. Although I would rather have that then not being able to run my Linux games years later because it hasn't been updated to use the libraries that ship with my current Linux OS.

@TeamLinux01 @killyourfm @schykle

I'm pretty basic in how I classify:
Current Gen: PS5 etc
Last Gen: PS4 and etc
Classic, Retro whatever: anything behind this
So basically Current gen is what is on store shelves, last gen is sitting at a gamestop used section, and anything you have to chase down is classic and such.

@killyourfm if you never used matrix after spaces were added (2021ish iirc?) They're kinda the "community", you still need to create rooms under it. They're a nice way to group up related rooms where people can see them all and join/leave them as they want and lets you create permissions levels you only need to set in one place but can lock certain rooms against offtopic or spam. Can think of them as an analog to discords servers though public rooms in a community can be joined without joining

@killyourfm how does one find that space? (I have just created my Matrix account so this is all~ new to me.)

@lyonsinbeta No worries, I'll send invites when it actually goes live!

@lyonsinbeta Unrelated, but I really dig your profile image!

@killyourfm thanks! It's an emote an artist made for me back when I streamed.

@killyourfm thanks I’m all signed up and ready to go

@killyourfm is the room public? What instance is it on? Can’t seem to find it.

@killyourfm I can't seem to find it, maybe it's not indexed yet. What's the full room link?

@killyourfm it looks like they wonderfully worked their subtle skills in the alliteration anvil 😆

@jlamasfripp I confidently confess that I adore amazing alliteration.

@killyourfm retro you say

My oldest son is a true retro game nerd 🤓

@cupcakerob Tell him I'm jealous of that PS1 + blue controller.

@killyourfm I have Matrix but never knew anyone else that had it so I haven’t used it. Not sure if I can search for the group from within the app or I have to be invited.

@CleanDesign Once it's ready to go, I'll definitely make sure you know about it. (Not public at the moment)

@killyourfm @Jojonintendo @thanius @nausahaver @baltmatrix @TeamLinux01 @chris @Btph @gsquirrel @CleanDesign @tylnesh @jsstaedtler

I knew something I got into would make me eventually have to add Matrix to my quiver. The proliferation of messaging apps continues. 😂

@killyourfm Are you aware of the DOS Game Club podcast? I'm really happy to hear there might be more in a similar vein!

@rocky1138 I'm aware of it now! It's neat that there's a dedicated Mastodon instance for it.

@killyourfm It's super nice for sharing media and files. Element is a solid client.

@imnotafeline I did enjoy Element during my time at Mozilla, and I know Matrix has improved a lot since then, so I'm looking forward to it!

@killyourfm Make sure to recommend Element X on mobile, unless people actually need the features on the classic Element client. Element X is way faster.
