As Sarah O'Connor (FT) observes, there are move across the USA to remove (or reduce) safeguards on child labour, including limitations on school children's working hours (and shifts) during term time.

As she notes, nighttime shift work for under-18s (school children) was banned in the UK in the early C19th, but now C21st US workplaces look like they will be re-introducing such work schedules for working school children.

The world of Victorian capitalism looks to be returning!

#JaguarLandRover, based in Britain, said it would temporarily stop exporting its luxury cars to the US. #Stellantis idled factories in #Canada & #Mexico that make Chrysler & Jeep vehicles & laid off 900 US #workers who supplied those factories w/engines & other parts.

#Audi, the luxury division of #Volkswagen, also paused exports of cars to the #US from #Europe, telling dealers to sell whatever they still had on their lots.

People's Union USA, with founder John Schwarz, is initiating a nationwide boycott against Walmart that starts today.

"Schwarz has cited federal income tax opposition, equality issues, high prices, and a bid to help smaller local businesses as factors behind the blackout."

ON SUNDAY, dozens of #migrant #workers in #Taipei gathered at the city’s central train station
to protest gender violence against migrant women
as well as raise awareness about the plight of Palestinian women and children through a flash mob performance.
This was in celebration of
“One Billion Rising”,
an annual campaign against rape and #gender #violence held in 60 countries worldwide.
The name comes from a statistic that within their lifetime,
at least one in three women across the world will have encountered gender violence, which totals to around one billion people.

I had a whole pithy mini-essay planned on LLMs, the "AI" scam that is attempting to build the ultimate dystopia, the companies pushing it, the workers and citizens who are its victims, and what it means for society as a whole.

Presentation was to be a "future history"-type approach, which I've always had a soft spot for in sci-fi.

And ... I just can't. Trump today decided that not only was driving the world's largest economy off a cliff the prudent thing to do, merely crashing it wasn't enough, so he decided to fill the backseat with lit sticks of TNT, and stick a lit rag in the fuel filler.

The streets tomorrow will be (only metaphorically, with luck) running with blood. People everywhere are going to be hurt, some devastatingly so.

I wonder if this is the kind of thing that Charles Stross means when he talks about the world stopping him from writing or finishing something he'd been planning on. It feels awful.

“We’ve had a lot of devastating days, but this really is unfathomable. It’s astounding, it will affect patients with all kinds of different kinds of infections, and Americans will suffer, and people will die, and that’s a horrible thing to see coming.”

And here are some examples of the costs & difficulties people have at work... given that these stories come from MPs in the House of Commons, perhaps Keir Starmer & Rachel Reeves might therefore know of some people impacted exactly in the way the TUC suggests disabled workers are....

Will that change their mind about disability benefits cuts? I doubt it...
