One technical detail: in matrix chats are not hosted on a single server but they are replicated across all servers. If etke.cc would go down, people on other servers could continue chatting like normal. Only a few things would not work, but I don't remember what. Invite links I think and maybe something to do with stickers?

@killyourfm I hadn't heard of that hosting provider. I'll give them a shot. I am currently using matrix.org but want to host my own Matrix. I was going to do that in my house, but honestly would rather do that on a VPS.
As always, following you (on the Fediverse, not IRL, that'd be illegal and weird) opens my eyes to cool stuff!
@dm I think I found it recommended somewhere on the matrix.org documentation? After struggling with deploying it myself on a VPS, I turned to them and it was smooth sailing. I'm also pleased with their pricing. Ultimately only paying about $5 more per month than I would have for one of the leanest droplets from Digital Ocean.

@killyourfm I set up a Matrix server using this provider. Way easier than spinning one up at home!

For how affordable they are (and how reliable it's been so far) I see no reason to invest the time and potential headaches to setup and maintain one on your own.
@killyourfm Definitely. It's much more user friendly for those that don't want to go through the hassle of hosting at home. And yeah, it is not very expensive all things considered.
