Van Halen's final album, "A Different Kind Of Truth," is no longer available on any music streaming platforms. You can't buy a digital copy of it. If you're just getting into the band now (or getting back into them) and want to check it out on a whim, you'll need to buy it on CD or vinyl, or sail the pirate waters.
THIS is exactly why I'm gravitating back towards physical media, and why I'm digitizing my existing collection to throw on things like Plex and my iPod.
My music, on my terms.
@killyourfm I've moved back to physical media as well (or the rare digital purchases if they are 1) lossleaa & 2) drm free). I've setup Navidrome to be able to "stream" my library over the internet and a decent subsonic client on Android allows you to even sync stuff eg to your phone.
All done with FOSS and all under my full control.
@killyourfm TBH: VH is one of the most dysfunctional bands in existence, so this is kind of an edge case. I love them to death, but they are screwed up as heck.
@killyourfm a LOT of the music I grew up with isn’t available anywhere online. And finding physical media has been difficult as well. is my only option in some cases.
@baltmatrix It's really sad... I've been going through my CD binders and ripping them to FLAC, and coming across small indie bands I feature on Insomnia Radio in the mid-2000s.
Many of them, it's like they never existed unless you have their physical release. They never put their stuff on streaming, they have no online footprint at all...
@baltmatrix @killyourfm This is an issue I face as well because I would have to go out of my way to get a hold of physical media.
I've simply resorted to using iTunes instead to buy my music without any DRM. It's one of the few things I really love about Apple these days.
@killyourfm I'm moving back to physical media. I just discovered this Automatic Ripping Machine code (https://github.com/automatic-ripping-machine/automatic-ripping-machine) and it's made things a breeze. I also wrote some scripts to recompress everything to use the same code so I can play it through jellyfin on my tv. I haven't started with music yet but it's next on my list
@rapscallionreaves This looks awesome! Any setup time involved would absolutely be negated by all the time saved not clicking through a ton of menus for every single disc.
I'm gonna look into this when I start ripping movies (most of the music CDs are ripped already).
Thanks!
@killyourfm no problem! And if you want to save space on those movies, you can check out https://gitlab.com/reavessm/recode
This is going to be the case for lots of music and video. It will be nonexistent in future decades because streaming services won't have it available and people will have disposed of their physical media. People should retain all physical media they have as well as purchase what they find at thrift stores.
Future generations will discover the one hidden gem of a movie on DVD in grandmas attic.
@MichaelBishop I agree with you. And I think people are slowly waking up to the fact that they own nothing when it comes to media, unless they can hold it in their hands.
We need to accelerate that realization, however.
@killyourfm funny you mention it, I’ve been on a big VH kick the last couple of weeks, learning some guitar parts, and listening to the biography “Eruption.” I recently got to the part where Eddie is talking about that record and I was really surprised it wasn’t streaming anywhere. Luckily I bought it back when it came out, so I had it in my library.
