Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Since 3.5-sonnet, we have been monitoring AI model announcements, and trying pretty much every major new release that claims some sort of improvement. Unexpectedly by me, aside from a minor bump with 3.6 and an even smaller bump with 3.7, literally none of the new models we've tried have made a significant difference on either our internal benchmarks or in our developers' ability to find new bugs. This includes the new test-time OpenAI models.</p><p>At first, I was nervous to report this publicly because I thought it might reflect badly on us as a team. Our scanner has improved a lot since August, but because of regular engineering, not model improvements. It could've been a problem with the architecture that we had designed, that we weren't getting more milage as the SWE-Bench scores went up.</p><p>But in recent months I've spoken to other YC founders doing AI application startups and most of them have had the same anecdotal experiences: 1. o99-pro-ultra announced, 2. Benchmarks look good, 3. Evaluated performance mediocre. This is despite the fact that we work in different industries, on different problem sets. Sometimes the founder will apply a cope to the narrative ("We just don't have any PhD level questions to ask"), but the narrative is there.</p><p>I have read the studies. I have seen the numbers. Maybe LLMs are becoming more fun to talk to, maybe they're performing better on controlled exams. Some packages have tests that require altering the build tree for things like filesystem manipulation tests, but they now fail as the build trees are mounted as read only now. This affects important packages with a lot of dependents like `go`, `ruby` and `scons`. Yuna<p>Maven 4: Still XML. Still boring. Still Winning.</p><p>What's so ugly about Maven?<br>Oh, right, XML. The ancient language feared by the hipster cult of Gradle.</p><p>But let's be honest:<br>You don't write build files every day. You come back after months, forget everything, and now… you're debugging a Groovy poem.<br>Maven? You squint at the XML, and boom. Autocomplete, structure, sanity.</p><p>Maven 4? Still XML. Still boring. Still… Winning at automations.<br>Yes there are more features, and yes you can use other DSL's than XML with polyglot or any other extension like also before.<br>Something new and interesting could be the BOM packaging and requirement of java 17. You can always build lower stuff also with 17. It's simply Java.</p><p>My killer feature of Maven:<br>👉 Stable, sandboxed plugins, run directly from the command line. No need to create bloated build files.<br>No copy-pasting the same config into 12 submodules and repositories.<br>All automated. All under my control.<br>No need to depend on the next third party cloud elf named like dependabot. <br>Or an SDK Man for switching java versions.<br>All I need is simply a JAR file and a build tool which does not disrupt me. </p><p>✨ Favourite Maven Spells - aka plugins running on my CI without defining them:<br>mvn wrapper:wrapper - Because of consistency, no jar binary inside my repo.<br>mvn dependency:tree - See who brought the uninvited guests.<br>mvn versions:update-properties - Auto-update without the bots.<br>mvn license:add-third-party - keep track of used licenses<br>mvn org.owasp:dependency-check-maven:check - Security without sacrifice.<br>[...]</p><p>Stop waiting for the next shiny thing, you can always contribute to any tool.<br>Start building.
