Can I get a sanity check on something?
If you're reviewing a new handheld gaming device like the Legion Go S, would you benchmark it against other handhelds like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally, or, say, a bunch of expensive gaming laptops instead?
Because that's what PC World did, and I'm equal parts baffled and angry.
@killyourfm personally, I'd have benched it against *both*, with text explaining that the laptop was a bit of a joker, but was included to demonstrate the discrepancy between classes of device.
I used to do the same thing with laptop CPUs and GPUs vs their desktop counterparts, because so many people have absolutely no idea that a laptop i7 is so much slower than a desktop i7, a laptop RTX is so much slower than a desktop RTX, etc.
But yeah, the chart you linked here is wack af.
@jimsalter I would find your approach compelling and educational!
But the sad thing here is it's not just that chart. Identical hardware comparisons extend to PCMark and battery benchmarks too!
@killyourfm I got yelled at by angry turbo gamers a couple of times when I did exactly that while I was at Ars. But it isn't exactly difficult to get yourself yelled at by turbo gamers, IME...
@jimsalter Well, when you exist and have a publicly accessible opinion about anything tech or gaming, you WILL get yourself yelled at
@killyourfm I absolutely DREADED having to do the damn PC build pieces (godbox / hotrod / budget box), pretty much entirely because of gamers. God forbid you spec a GENERAL PURPOSE PC with 32GiB of RAM (or even 16GiB!) if a gamer has ever seen a machine with 8GiB manage a decent artificial benchmark on a single game running on a bench with no other apps open, no twitch streaming, etc etc etc.
