"Proton isn’t foolproof or bulletproof.
With a dedicated Linux version, there is no guesswork about which Proton version to use. No unintentional breakage. The developer is in full control of ensuring gamers have the best experience possible. And with Linux gaming on the rise, this is a good look for game developers to have."

Forbes · Will ‘Civ 7’ Run On Steam Deck And Linux?By Jason Evangelho

ALSO! As a benchmark junkie, I can't wait to test the performance of the native Linux version, and the game running under Proton.

@killyourfm I'm interested too—Firaxis has had a spotty track record with Linux ports. XCOM 2 had a pretty terrible one.

@serebit Oh I had forgotten about that. Here's to hoping the native version of Civ 7 is more performant and stable than the game running under Proton. I think Linux gaming would benefit from that outcome...

@killyourfm I agree! Though I do still have reservations. Native Linux ports only last as long as they're properly updated and supported, and far too many publishers/studios leave them in a barely (if at all) working state. I'm really hoping that the rise of the Deck and SteamOS will lead to these ports getting the attention they need to be worthwhile over leaving Valve to do the work.

@serebit @killyourfm I think native Linux versions are only a good idea if they get the same level of care as the Windows version. I don't want "ports", I want a Linux version built from the same codebase, at the same time, with the same level of polish as the Windows version. I want saves and multiplayer compatibility to be guaranteed. The early Linux ports were awful and it's almost always better to run the Windows version on Proton. Don't contract out the port to a third party!

@killyourfm my experience with the older ports is the Proton version tends to have better performance and crash less than the native Linux ports (including Civ). I will be interested to see your benchmarks!
