"The mountains are calling, and I must go."
In 2015, I put thru-hiking the John Muir Trail on my bucket list. In August 2025, I'm making it happen! Pending permit, I'll set out southbound from Yosemite Valley on a 211-mile trek to the 14,505ft summit of Mt. Whitney.
I'll formally start training in a couple weeks. My plan is to spend gradually longer times in and around Yosemite, going from long dayhikes to several 4-day wilderness trips with a full pack.
I'm pumped!

@killyourfm It looks lovely.
@killyourfm I just finished reading a book about through-hiking the John Muir Trail. What an astonishing hike. North to south is the way to go because it allows you to slowly acclimate to the altitude and—wow—that trail spends a lot of time at high altitude. You are in for the hike of a lifetime!
@CA_Hawthorne yes! Southbound is my plan, but it's apparently TOUGH to get a permit leaving out of Happy Isles, Yosemite Valley which is the northern terminus. And summiting Mt Whitney feels like the perfect way to end such a hike. As if you've been preparing for that trek the entire journey, you know?
But if I have to go the opposite way, or set off from a different trailhead in Yosemite, I'll gladly do it. I'm so excited, despite it being a year away.
@CA_Hawthorne PS: Which book? I'm reading the Essential Guide to JMT by Elizabeth Weng.
@killyourfm Force of Nature by Joan M. Griffin. Given my age and sex it was easy for me to relate to her challenges.
@killyourfm I hope you’re able to leave from Happy Isles, but you do what you have to do to fulfill the dream. It’s a shame that it has to be that way, though. You’re right, Whitney being the highest point in the lower 48 makes it a great finish, but even it has its restrictions due to humans overrunning it to bag the prize.
