A fledgling (I think) Blue Jay just literally dropped into the garden. No mama bird around making a fuss over it though….

EDIT: Confirmed to be a Barn Swallow.

@loren aha! Nice ID, thanks for that. It just started flapping its wings and made it a couple inches off the ground, so hopefully it will figure out this whole flying thing and return to the nest soon.

@killyourfm @loren So cute! 🤩 As far as I know, swallows have a similar development as swifts, although they're not related. Juvenile swifts do not have a fledgling stage. As soon as they're ready, after hours and hours of exercising, nestlings fly straight from the nest up in the sky. Therefore, a swift on the ground does always need help. And if I'm right, your lil' buddy might need help too.

@katzentratschen @loren I've been keeping watch to ensure none of the neighborhood stray cats come around.

@katzentratschen @loren The Merlin bird app also identified it as a barn swallow. And it just showed up on my front step again. I think it has a slight wing injury.
