When I moved to Europe in 2017, I did a reset on life and abandoned most of my possessions, including all my consoles dating back to the NES (kept most of the games though).
It was emotionally crushing for a while. But then in 2021 the #SteamDeck happened. Combined with easy emulation, it's allowed me to start easily chipping away at the backlog again!
(Btw I'm back in the states now, but done with collecting retro consoles. Think I'll stick with handhelds!)
@killyourfm very cool! I did the same in 2016 (to Germany from California). I left behind my books (shelves and boxes full), thousands of records, cds and cassette tapes and my video games (PC and console). Tidal doesn't replace the music collection, but it helps. For books I had to switch to an e-reader anyway. Games, the ones I could use on Steam are still there, but what I am really really missing is Pro Pinball: The Web (1996). It's emulated on Archive.org but I can never get it to play.
@chillicampari It is kind of... freeing, isn't it? Not having the baggage of all those material things. Not at first though. At first, it's excruciating! It took me years to finally embrace digital over physical with everything except records.
(Also, I can definitely relate to issues like the one you have with Pro Pinball: The Web. For me it's Transformers: War for Cybertron).
@killyourfm yeah, really it kind of is. But yep, records. Some of them were signed- but even though I don't have them anymore I still have the memory of having them signed :) But I really like that I can listen to (almost) anything just about anywhere.
Not to say I haven't collected a bunch of thing here, I'm actually going through things right now to streamline and get better organized.
@killyourfm I recently sold my of my consoles and physical games. It is nice to have freed up space.
The Steam Deck is such a great device, that if this thing existed back when I was young, I don't think I would have even bothered buying anything else.
