My new life goal is to have a 20+ acre homestead by the time I'm 50. A forever home. Somewhere semi-remote and surrounded by forest. Less people and more animals. Less technology. Less preservatives and toxins. Less noise. Less light pollution. Less reliance on anyone but myself and the land.
@killyourfm getting a bit of Unabomber vibes
@killyourfm isn't 50 a bit late for you to fully enjoy it though? That's a lof land to maintain for only about a decade, no?
@necrophcodr Well, I’m 48 now… and I don’t plan on being dead by 60!
@killyourfm haha, I meant nothing of the dort! I did miss the part of your current age, so please forgive me on that. My point was merely for people with this goal to start early, so the payoff lasts longer! Not that I am an authority on the matter, obviously.
@necrophcodr HAHA, I’m happy you clarified that. And I’ll take it as an indirect complement ;-)
You’re absolutely right though! And I wish I would have opened my mind to this lifestyle two decades ago — but I was young and stupid.
@killyourfm I think that's literally everyone in tech
@albonycal HA! You know, I bet you’re right.
@killyourfm I do have a small 3 acre farm that my dad bought around a decade ago, gets quite decent LTE coverage (haven't tested for 5G)
@albonycal Do you find 3 acres enough for your personal needs/sustainability?
@killyourfm As in revenue from the farm? I'd say it's livable. We currently have a guy that works there and we go check every week or so. But it's certainly not enough to live peacefully (if you know what I mean)
If you assume that by the time you retire you have enough money (and you can live off interest from bank / have shares etc.) then the land is certainly enough.
(Ours is an orange farm)
@albonycal Ah, so you don’t live there as your main residence? I understand.
@killyourfm Yeah, it's around 40 mins away. Should be faster with a new road that's under construction.
@killyourfm I would share the same goal but I'd have to convince my other half
@killyourfm
I’m 54 now.
Built a house in Thailand.
Semi-remote.
Many animals.
Less noise.
So many stars at night.
I know what you mean.
@MartinH This reply made me smile. Thanks for sharing.
We are doing this right now, but with much less land. Construction should be starting within a week or two. We were only able to get an acre and a half, but it's heavily wooded and we're clearing only about a half acre in the middle to build the house. It's 30 minutes outside of town. When you pull up and get out of the car, all you hear is birds chirping. Nothing else. I cannot wait until we move in. We should be there before my 48th bday. Very excited. Good luck on your goal!
@finner Hell, I’m excited FOR you just based on that description. Enjoy the serenity!
@killyourfm could all want that... But it's tough
