Inspiration is a myth. I don't believe in it anymore.

Don't get trapped by it. Don't feel guilty about not being productive while you sit and wait for it to magically strike.

Know what inspiration is? It's allowing yourself the time to dedicate to creating. It's sitting down with the mindset of working on your art, your music, your writing, your cooking, your whatever.

Allow yourself the time, put yourself in the moment, and go make something!

@killyourfm I've always seen inspiration as something akin to tuning to a radio: when inspiration strikes me, it's indeed like I ended up by accident on some psychic radio waves where I can hear clearly something that didn't exist in my mind before, so something I just have to remember and write down. I don't know if I'll ever figure out if the music I've composed actually came from me, or from some collective subconscious thingie somewhere

@killyourfm whatever it is, it's definitely not something I can force, so yes it's important to give it time and just relax, because either it happens on its own or it won't. The only thing you can proactively do is work on the ideas you got already and refine them

@lminiero I love how you describe this. Rick Rubin would call it…basically being receptive to “the source” and then putting in the work to translate the signal to some tangible creative work.

@killyourfm I believe it is important for myself to learn what I need to get in a place for creativity in addition to setting aside the time.

@killyourfm was working on a flappy bird-like game in Unity on Xubuntu. After getting everything all set up and about 20 minutes into the tutorial (which was about 2 hours after creating custom sprites in Aseprite), I had to sit in front of the tube and vegetate.

@killyourfm I will never get tired of posting this amazing John Cleese talk about creativity:

@killyourfm I'm at my best when I'm inspired. It doesn't come naturally to just sit down and write a story or a poem.

Creativity has to be based on and invoked by something. I usually find inspiration in the people, events and places around me.

@dusnm I can definitely respect this. What I probably should have articulated better is that I don’t want to wait on inspiration in order to create things.

it would be extreme for me to say that inspiration doesn’t exist for all people

@killyourfm Thanks for the pep talk Jason. I've been struggling for the past few years to write compelling articles and it's hard when the inspiration comes and goes especially it mainly happens when you have a 9-to-5 unrelated to your field of interest. That's why I try to post at least one toot per day if I don't have enough material for a blog post.
